70th International Mount Everest Day 2023 (USNCA)

US Nepal Climbers Association (USNCA) is pleased to announce that May 29, 2023, will be the 70th Anniversary of the FIRST ASCENT OF MT. EVEREST by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

The 70th International Mount Everest Day will be observed on May 29, 2023, in New York City, and will be hosted by USNCA to celebrate, promote and preserve the culture of mountain climbing. The event will be supported by the Consulate General of Nepal, New York, USA.

We aim to celebrate the spiritual, cultural and economic significance of Mount Everest or ‘Sagarmatha’ in Nepali or Chomolungma (Mother Goddess of the World) as it plays in the day-to-day life of global climbing communities and the Himalayan communities.

The 70th International Everest Day 2023 event will facilitate spaces to promote mountaineering and sustainable tourism in Nepal, and climate change awareness impacting the Himalayan communities, while also opening space for those who want to study and/or engage in adventure sports. Nepal’s rich cultural diversity will also be the highlight of the event as we partner with indigenous, cultural and ethnic organizations based in the tri-state area. The cultural program presents traditional & folk dance, songs, and clothing showcasing different ethnic and caste-based groups of Nepal, from the sea level to the summit.

About International Mount Everest Day:
May 29, 1953, is recorded as the first time a human summited the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest (Chomolungma). Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to summit Mount Everest.

Hillary described the moment to National Geographic the following year in the July 1954 issue: “We are there. Nothing above us, a world below.”

Event Goals & Outcomes:
We will be celebrating this year’s International Mount Everest Day by gathering wider global mountaineering and climbing communities and the Himalayan communities together to celebrate achievements, connect with mission-aligned organizations and recognize important contributions and leaders in the mountaineering communities.

Through the annual Mount Everest Day event, our primary goal is to fundraise and/or dedicate the funds raised during the event towards USNCA’s objectives, which are as follows:
(1) to provide educational relief to the children of the climbers who lost their lives during the climbing from the welfare fund of the association
(2) to help in the promotion of sustainable tourism in Nepal
(3) to expand the relationship between mountaineers and mountain lovers scattered around the world and organize a similar program on the changing snow structure and mountain climbing culture.
(4) To save mountains for the present and future generations through climate change and mountain pollution awareness

Since 2014, we have successfully sent funds for educational support to three students in Nepal. The educational fund has been running for 9 years with total funds of $8,100 ($300/kid/year) disbursed as of 2022.

In addition, we have also supported climbing centers in the Himalayan region, including but not limited to, Solukhumbu, Sikkim, Thame, Nepal Mountain Academy, and Nepal Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) by gifting rock climbing shoes and harnesses.

The event will also promote mountaineering and tourism in Nepal, and raise climate change awareness impacting the Himalayan communities, while also opening space for those who want to study and/or engage in adventure sports.

Nepal’s rich cultural diversity will also be the highlight of the event as we partner with indigenous, cultural and ethnic organizations based in the tri-state area. The culture program presents traditional & folk dances, songs, and traditional clothing showcasing different ethnic and caste-based groups of Nepal, from the sea level to the summit.

This year, we plan to facilitate spaces to promote mountaineering and tourism in Nepal, and simultaneously raise climate change awareness impacting the Himalayan communities, while also opening space for those who want to study and/or engage in adventure sports. We will also provide authentic Himalayan food (breakfast and lunch) for the participants.

To make the event a success, please consider donating to Mount Everest Day 2023 organized by USNCA.
