Sajan, Srijana win Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition

Sajan Lama and Srijana Tamang have won the first Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition held at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub, Bouddha.
According to Tshiring Jangbu Sherpa, General Secretary at Nepal National Mountain Guides Association, Sajan stood victorious in male category while Srijana won the title in female category.
The first ever competition (Top Rope Edition) was jointly organised by the US Nepal Climbers Association and Nepal National Mountain Guide Association in celebration of climbing culture, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of legendary climber Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.
Dipen Gurung and Bijay Sunar became the first and second runner up in male category while Prerana Rai and Yangla Bhote won second and third prize respectively in female category, said Lakpa Nuru Sherpa, Treasurer at USNCA, Inc.
The first, second, and third positioned climbers were awarded a cash prize of NRs 15,000, NRs 10,000, and NRs 5,000, respectively. The winners also got hanging boards, certificates and striking medals while all participants were given certificates.
The event was jointly inaugurated by National Assembly member Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa and only living member of 1953 Everest expedition Kanchha Sherpa. The closing ceremony was observed by Tanka Lal Ghising, Member Secretary at National Sports Council.
The event was organised to promote the sport of climbing, offering a platform for climbers of all levels to showcase their skills and passion for ascending to new heights, USNCA founding president Serap Jangbu Sherpa informed.
“The competition also aimed at uniting climbers from diverse backgrounds, encouraging a vibrant and supportive community bound by a shared love for the ascent,” NNMGA President Ang Norbu Sherpa informed.
The event’s main sponsors were Seven Summit Treks and The North Face Nepal while Imagine Nepal Treks, 4Stories, USNCA chair Passang Nima Sherpa, New York-based social worker Pema Chhewang Sherpa, 8K Expeditions, Likla Outdoor, Wongchu Peak Promotion, Tag Nepal Treks, BaRo 360, Dawa Jangbu Sherpa, Lakpa Geljen Sherpa, Phutila Sherpa, Everest Hardware and Mountain Hardware among others supported the event.
There were 38 male and 20 female participants took part in the event. On the occasion, the USNCA also handed over educational financial aid to families of climbers who lost their lives during mountain climbing.
“In the coming years the annual event aims to diversify its categories,” Tshiring Jangbu informed. The organizers aim to introduce additional categories such as lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering, expanding the competition’s scope and providing more opportunities for climbers to showcase their skills across different disciplines.
