New York Street to be co-named after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on International Mt Everest Day
A street in New York, Queens of United States, will be co-named after the legendary Nepali climber Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on the occasion of International Mt Everest Day.
The 75th Street, between Broadway and Woodside Avenue, will officially be co-named Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Way on May 29 as US Nepal Climbers Association Inc and United Sherpa Associations USA inc would be marking the International Mt Everest Day and platinum jubilee of the first successful ascent of the world's highest peak. New York State had already declared May 29 as Mt Everest Day, passing a resolution under the leadership of USNCA President Passang Nima Sherpa.
Elmhurst Street will be co-named Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Way to honour the contributions of the Sherpa community and their culture, Sherpa said. NYC is home to many Nepali immigrants. "It's a proud moment for all Nepalese climbers and the Nepali community in New York," he added.
The United Sherpa Association has recommended Elmhurst Street to co-name it as Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Way.
Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary became the first climbers to reach the summit of Everest on May 29, 1953. In 1999, they were among TIME's 100 most influential people of the 20th century. The neighbourhood in which Norgay's honorary street is located is currently home to a large Nepali community.
The Sherpa community was well known for their mountain climbing abilities of Mount Everest, Council Member Danny Dromm said, while making the announcement, adding "It's important to recognize the contributions of the Nepalese community and culture they have brought to my district."
On May 29, "Sea to Summit" cultural performances from the Himalayas, Hills, and Terai will also be showcased, reflecting various cultures such as Tharu, Newari, Magar, Tamang, Gurung, Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and others.
