Press Release! – Urge the NY State Assembly to immediately reverse the resolution

PRESS RELEASE!

We are shocked to hear that, NY State assembly just passed a resolution, sponsored by Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar, to celebrate May 29th as Nepal Day. We would like to make you aware of the fact that the 29th is the anniversary of the historic day that Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Edmond Hillary of New Zealand succeeded in climbing the tallest peak Mt. Everest for the first time in human history.
May 29th was declared as an “International Mt. Everest Day” and the climbers from all over the world have been celebrating since 1953.
US Nepal Climbers Association has been celebrating this historic day with pride and joy in collaboration with the Consulate General of Nepal, United Sherpa Association, Sukhi NY, American Alpine Club, Explorer Club of the USA, New York City Outbound in New York City.
The proposal of this resolution was never discussed in the Nepali communities in New York. A handful of people are misleading the local elected officials and falsely using May 29th, which was recognized in Nepal and worldwide as International Mt. Everest Day. They are now stating that it’s the republic day of Nepal, which is not true.
According to the Nepali calendar, Nepal was declared as Republic on Jestha 15, 2065, which is May 28th, 2008. The only motive of this resolution is to diminish the increasing popularity of Nepali Climbers and the “International Mt. Everest Day”
We will not stand for the erasure of our history. We condemn the passing of the resolution by non-stakeholders and foreign actors. Therefore, urge the NY State Assembly to immediately reverse the resolution without further delay.

Mingmar Lama
(General Secretary)
