Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition (Top Rope Edition)

The Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition (Top Rope Edition) is an annual event organized by the US Nepal Climbers Association (USNCA) in collaboration with the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA). This competition, first held in January 2024, aims to promote the sport of climbing while honoring the legacy of the legendary Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

Held every January, the competition provides climbers of all levels with an exciting opportunity to showcase their skills and passion for the sport. It serves as a platform for both seasoned athletes and newcomers to connect, share their love for climbing, and compete in a supportive, inclusive environment. The event is designed to foster camaraderie among climbers and celebrate the enduring spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who, alongside Sir Edmund Hillary, became one of the first to summit Mount Everest in 1953.

A key feature of the competition is the Tribute Climb, an honorary top rope ascent that includes distinguished climbers, athletes, and local dignitaries. This climb symbolizes the impact of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s contributions to mountaineering and serves as a tribute to his historic achievements.

In addition to the competitive spirit, the event offers cash prizes for the top three finishers in both the male and female categories, along with certificates and medals for the winners. All participants also receive a certificate of participation. The competition is open to climbers over the age of 12, with a nominal registration fee.

The Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition not only serves as an annual celebration of climbing culture but also aims to inspire a new generation of climbers, with the goal of fostering professional growth and supporting the future of the sport in Nepal and beyond.
