Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition rescheduled for May 29

The US Nepal Climbers Association (USNCA) and the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) announced today the rescheduling of the third edition of the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Open Climbing Competition.

At a press meet, NNMGA President Tulsing Gurung and USNCA Founding President Serap Jangbu Sherpa stated that the event will now be held on May 29 at the Crimpanzee Adventure Hub in Bouddha. The new date coincides with the anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary.

“It was initially planned for January 29, but we have rescheduled it to May 29,” Gurung said. He added that the USNCA and NNMGA are jointly organizing the event to promote the sport of climbing, offering a platform for climbers of all levels to showcase their skills and passion.

As in previous years, separate categories will be held for men and women, with cash prizes for the top three participants in each group. “This year, we may introduce a lead climbing competition, whereas the previous editions featured only top-rope climbing,” Gurung noted. The event promises not only intense competition but also a celebration of climbing culture, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

USNCA Event Coordinator Serap Jangbu Sherpa emphasized that the competition aims to inspire interest in mountaineering and promote adventure tourism in Nepal. “We aim to introduce additional categories such as lead climbing, speed climbing, and bouldering,” he said. “This will expand the competition’s scope and provide more opportunities for climbers to showcase their skills across different disciplines.”
