“Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts”: USNCA, Sherpa Kyidug hold Broad Peak vigil in New York
The US Nepal Climbers Association, Inc. along with United Sherpa Association (USA) Inc (Sherpa Kyidug America, New York), held a memorial and candle-lighting ceremony in tribute to mountaineers who lost their lives during the Broad Peak (8,047m) expedition in Pakistan, according to the organisers.
USNCA and Sherpa Kyidug said the gathering was held to light candles in honour of all the brave mountaineers who lost their invaluable lives in the pursuit of mountaineering, and to offer heartfelt tribute to their sacred memory.
The associations said the programme was not a remembrance of a single individual or a single incident, but a collective effort to honour the courage, dedication, sacrifice and incomparable contribution of all mountaineers who devoted their lives to the Himalayas.
The organisers said they would always hold the climbers’ great contributions and memory in its heart with respect, praying for the eternal peace of their souls while expressing deep condolences and solidarity with the grieving families, relatives, friends and the global mountaineering community.
“They have gone from our sight, but will never be far from our hearts,” the associations said, closing the tribute with the line: “Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.”
The ceremony followed a written memorial tribute and message of condolence issued by USNCA on August 2, in which the association had offered its profound tribute and sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all national and international climbers, Sherpas, mountaineers and mountain support personnel who died in the Broad Peak disaster.
