Team Garma Crowned Champion at Babu Chhiri Sherpa Memorial Volleyball Tournament
WALLKILL, N.Y.- August 29, 2026 – Team Garma was crowned champion of the Babu Chhiri Sherpa Memorial Volleyball Tournament 2026, held Saturday at Sherpa Lhapso Land in Wallkill, New York.
The second edition of the memorial tournament was jointly organized by the US Nepal Climbers Association Inc. (USNCA) and the United Sherpa Association (U.S.A.) Inc. – Sherpa Kyidug America, New York.
The tournament was held honoring the memory and legacy of the late legendary mountaineer Babu Chhiri Sherpa.
Team Dolakha finished as the tournament’s runner-up, completing a strong showing in the competition. Team Garma and Team Dolakha were recognized for their outstanding performances, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Held at Sherpa Lhapso Land, 186 River Road, Wallkill, N.Y., the tournament brought together volleyball players, families, community members, organizations, businesses and supporters for a day centered on sports, friendship and community connection.
While volleyball was at the heart of the event, organizers emphasized broader goals of promoting unity, friendship, sportsmanship, discipline, youth participation and community engagement. The tournament provided an opportunity for different generations to come together and strengthen relationships within the Nepali communities.
The memorial tournament also served as a tribute to Babu Chhiri Sherpa, whose remarkable mountaineering achievements and legacy continue to inspire the Nepali and Sherpa communities. His name and contributions remain an important part of the community’s shared history.
The successful tournament was made possible through the support of community partners, sponsors, businesses, organizations, Tsokpas, families, volunteers, athletes and supporters. Organizers expressed their sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed time, resources and encouragement to the event.
The collaboration between USNCA and the United Sherpa Association demonstrated the value of community organizations working together to promote sports, fellowship and cultural connection while honoring the legacy of respected members of the community.
With Team Garma taking the championship and Team Dolakha finishing runner-up, the 2026 Babu Chhiri Sherpa Memorial Volleyball Tournament concluded as both a celebration of athletic achievement and a meaningful tribute to Babu Chhiri Sherpa.
