Candlelight Vigil in Queens Raises Support for Families Affected by Disasters in Nepal
US Nepal Climbers Association, Rotary Club of New York Queens and United Sherpa Association launch humanitarian relief campaign
QUEENS, NEW YORK — A candlelight vigil and prayer program was held at Sherpa Kyidug in Queens, New York, bringing members of the Nepali and Sherpa communities together to mourn those who lost their lives in the recent floods, landslides and other natural disasters in Nepal and to express solidarity with families facing the devastating consequences.
The program was jointly organized by the US Nepal Climbers Association Inc. (USNCA), Rotary Club of New York Queens, and United Sherpa Association USA Inc. The Consul General of Nepal, Mr. Dhadiram Bhandari, attended the gathering as the chief guest.
During the solemn program, participants lit candles and offered collective prayers for the eternal peace of those who lost their lives, the speedy recovery of those injured, and strength and courage for families and communities affected by the disasters.
The gathering also became an important platform for humanitarian action. The three organizing organizations formally launched a relief fundraising campaign to assist disaster-affected families in Nepal through the Government of Nepal and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
As the first contribution to the campaign, Mr. Ranji Nuru Sherpa donated $1,000, setting an example of generosity and community responsibility. Fundraising efforts are continuing, with individuals, community members and supporters contributing to the relief initiative.
Additional donations are also being collected in connection with the Babu Chhiri Sherpa Memorial Volleyball Tournament, scheduled for August 29 at Sherpa Lhapso Land in Wallkill, New York. Organizers said the tournament will provide another opportunity for community members to contribute toward relief efforts for families affected by the disasters in Nepal.
The candlelight vigil underscored the strong connection between the Nepali diaspora and communities back home. Participants called for continued compassion, solidarity and practical support during a difficult period for families affected by loss and destruction.
Organizers expressed their deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the humanitarian campaign, including individuals, organizations, community leaders, volunteers and well-wishers.
The event served as a reminder that in times of tragedy, communities can come together across borders to offer comfort, assistance and hope.
“Standing together in sorrow and extending support in times of disaster is our shared humanitarian responsibility,” organizers said.
As fundraising continues, community members are being encouraged to contribute whatever they can to help families affected by the disasters.
